The Trinity

The Trinity is a term we don’t find in The Bible.  But scriptures clearly reveal the three persons of God and the role of each one.  Each person is fully God, not 1/3 God.  And there was never a time when all three persons of the Trinity did not exist.

The Godhead or Trinity (God in Three Persons)

God establishes who He is – one God in three persons from everlasting. 

Deuteronomy 6:4 (AMP) “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one [the only God]!
Genesis 1:2 (NLT) The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.  
Genesis 1:26 (AMP) Then God said, “Let Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) make man in Our image, according to Our likeness [not physical, but a spiritual personality and moral likeness]; and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the cattle, and over the entire earth, and over everything that creeps and crawls on the earth.”  
I John 5:7 (NKJV) For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. 
John 1:1 (RSV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 14:1 (NIV) “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.

The Father decrees His Son is begotten

Psalm 2:7 (NKJV) “I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.
On the surface, the LORD God (the Father) has decreed He has a Son.  But there is much more to unpack in the preceding verse.  Jesus is speaking and declaring what His Father has said to Him and what His Father has decreed.  We need to remember that God (in 3 Persons) operates in and out of time and space.  And where there is no time, eternity could be considered as one continuous day.  Could it be that this decree by God the Father was given before the creation of the world?  As with prophecy, something is declared as done/fulfilled even before it takes place on our timeline.  Is the Father decreeing the manifestation of His Son’s incarnate birth – begotten of the Father before all worlds (not made)?  Or, is the Father referring to His Son’s resurrection – the first begotten of the dead?  And, does this decree carry with it the promise of the Messiah King (Jesus) who will reign on earth in His Millennial Kingdom?  This verse gives us much to think about.

In the following verses, the Son is speaking while making reference to the Father and the Holy Spirit. 

Isaiah 48:16 (NKJV) “Come near to Me, hear this: I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; From the time that it was, I was there. And now the Lord God and His Spirit Have sent Me.”
Isaiah 61:1 (NKJV) “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

God is a living triune Spirit.  Each person of the Godhead (Trinity) has a purpose while all are in full cooperation.  The three are one God, co-equal and co-eternal, with the same nature and attributes.  Because of this, they are each worthy of the same worship, confidence, and obedience.

What is the role of each Person of the Trinity?

The Trinity may not be easy for us to understand.  But we cannot put God in a box and try to make Him into our image.  In the end, we must let God be who He is – One God in Three Persons.
